Screenplay Contest

In 2018, Film Schenectady launched its first screenplay competition.  In 8 short weeks 192 submissions were received from around the country and across the pond.  Winners were announced in style at a red carpet event complete with champagne reception, food stations, awards presentation, entertainment and after party.   Applications for the 2nd Electric City Screenplay Competition open January 01, 2019.

GRAND PRIZE – Feature Film $2,000 *

GRAND PRIZE – TV Pilot $1,000 *

FILM 2nd Place Winner – Evaluation & consultation, steps for taking your screenplay/script to market, and list of market resources ($1,850 value)

TV PILOT 2nd Place Winner – Story consult and Skype session to hash out tone and content, including one page, synopsis, and loglines ($599 value)

 3rd PLACE WINNERS (Film & TV Pilot)  Script analysis and copy of “4 Magic Questions of Screenwriting” ($450 value)

* All winners receive a waiver to apply to the Northeast Filmmakers Lab 6th edition in 2019.


*All submissions must be original, and the sole property of the applicant(s). If based upon another person’s life or upon a book or other underlying work, applicant(s) must secure necessary rights to make such adaptions.

*Script must be in PDF format.

*Script PDF must have a properly formatted file name (i.e. Heaven Called by Josephine Marotta.pdf)

*Please upload the correct file of your script. Under absolutely no circumstances will substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts be made.

*Scripts will not be returned.

*All entries must be in English.

*The contest is open to anyone 18 years of age or older.

*There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit.

*You may not submit the same script more than once.

*FEATURE FILMS are $45 per entry, TV PILOTS are $30 per entry.

*One Hour and Half Hour Pilots are in the same TV PILOT award category.

*Number of script pages permitted: Feature Film (80-120), One Hour Pilot (45-65), Half Hour Pilot (20-42).

*It is suggested that scripts/screenplays be registered with the US Copyright Office, and/or Writers Guild of America (

*Each entrant will receive an e-mail notifying them of the writing competition results.

*Judges who have previously optioned or produced scripts/screenplays from participating contestants will not be allowed to judge that writer’s submission, those entries will be read by other Judges on the panel.·

*Members of The Schenectady Film Commission, contest Judges, and employees of the Judges are not eligible to enter.
