Conversation with Stephen Lang

2018 Special Industry Guest 

This year’s lab fellows will meet privately with actor / mentor Stephen Lang (Avatar, Beyond Glory) on Day 1 of Northeast Filmmakers Lab 5th edition.

The New York State Archives Partnership Trust has announced Stephen Lang as the winner of the 2018 Empire State Archives & History Award.  Stephen Lang, award-winning stage and film actor, writer, and producer and star of His Dark Land, will receive the 2018 Empire State Archives and History Award from the New York State Archives Partnership Trust.

The public is invited to hear Lang speak about his career as an actor and history enthusiast, interviewed by friend and nationally prominent Lincoln Scholar Harold Holzer on October 25, 2018 in Albany.

Stephen Lang has earned enduring critical and popular acclaim over the course of a distinguished career as an actor in theatre, television, and film. His work on Broadway includes Death of a SalesmanA Few Good MenThe Speed of Darkness, and Hamlet. Nominations and awards include The Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, Helen Hayes, and Joseph Jefferson awards.

Lang has performed his solo play, Beyond Glory, for audiences all over the world, receiving the Chairman’s Medal for Distinguished Service from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Bob Hope award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. His acclaimed film of Beyond Glory has received awards at the Barbados Independent Film Festival, Buffalo Niagara Film Fest, and the Phoenix Film Fest. Other memorable films include Last Exit to BrooklynDeath of a SalesmanTombstoneGettysburgGods and GeneralsPublic Enemies, Avatar, and Don’t Breathe. He is currently filming 4 Avatar sequels, directed by James Cameron. He has received Honorary Doctorates from Jacksonville University, and from his alma mater, Swarthmore College. He is a member of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of The Actors Studio.

The Empire State Archives and History Award acknowledges the outstanding contributions by a national figure to advance the understanding and uses of history in society. Previous award honorees include C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb, historians Doris Kearns Goodwin, Michael Beschloss, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., James McPherson, Robert Caro, Ron Chernow, David McCullough and Harold Holzer, documentarian Ken Burns, and actors Sam Waterson and Richard Dreyfuss for their popularization of history and civic literacy.

Lang’s talk on will be held 7 pm on October 25, 2018 at Chancellors Hall, New York State Education Building, 89 Washington Avenue, in Albany.
